Getting to Île d’Orléans

Let our local farmers and winemakers share their fascinating stories with you. Discover the incredible talent of our many artists and artisans. All around the island, nature, the river, cultural activities, and heritage treasures invite you to stay just a little longer. Indeed, with over a hundred tourism businesses and such a rich history, Île d’Orléans is bound to steal your heart!

Île d’Orléans is located just 15 kilometers (9 miles) from Quebec City. Its proximity to the capital makes it easily accessible through various modes of transportation (car, bus).

How long does it take to drive around the island?

The Chemin Royal (Royal Road) forms a 67-kilometer (42-mile) loop. If you drive non-stop, it takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. However, to truly enjoy the scenic landscapes, artisan shops, vineyards, and heritage villages, we highly recommend planning for a full day, or even a multi-day stay!

Can I visit the island without a car?

There is no continuous public transit system operating within the island. If you do not have a car, you can book a guided bus tour or rent a vehicle from Quebec City.

Is biking around the island suitable for everyone?

Please note that there are no dedicated bike paths on the island. The full 67-km loop requires a good level of physical fitness, as you will be sharing the road with vehicles at all times (paved shoulders), and the terrain features a few challenging hills.

Is everything closed during winter and early spring?

The island never completely sleeps! While some farm stands and seasonal boutiques close their doors from November to April, many of our creators, accommodations, sugar shacks, and restaurants remain open year-round or reopen in early spring. The peaceful winter atmosphere and the crisp April air offer a unique charm. We invite you to check our business directory to confirm the opening hours of your favorite stops before heading out.

Are dogs allowed in attractions and businesses?

Leashed dogs are welcome in municipal parks and at several scenic lookout points. However, due to health and safety regulations, they are generally not allowed inside gourmet shops, interpretation centers, or in pick-your-own fields. We recommend checking directly with the specific businesses you plan to visit.

What is there to do on the island if it rains?

Even when the weather is unpredictable, the island knows how to welcome you! It is the perfect time to explore our vineyards, discover our local terroir shops, meet our artisans, visit our museums, and savor delicious local cuisine.
